Which lube, which size: water vs silicone vs hybrid, 100 ml vs 1000 ml

Short answer: buy a water-based lubricant if you use silicone toys or are not sure what your toys are made of; buy a silicone lubricant if you want the longest-lasting glide for skin-on-skin or shower use and own no silicone toys; buy a hybrid only when you want something between the two and have checked it against your toys. On size, start with 100 ml of anything new, and move to 500 ml or 1000 ml only for the formula you already know you like, because the litre bottle is where the per-100 ml cost drops most.

Prices change, so we do not quote them here. The arithmetic is the same whatever the price: divide the current price of a 1000 ml bottle by ten, a 500 ml bottle by five and a 250 ml bottle by two and a half, and compare that figure with the 100 ml bottle.

Water-based lubricants

Water-based is the default for a reason: it is compatible with every toy material and with latex condoms, and it rinses off. The trade-off is that it dries sooner than silicone, so you reapply.

Thin, everyday water-based

  • Pjur Aqua 100 ml, also in 250 ml and 500 ml. Unscented, free from oils and fragrance, latex-compatible, and pjur’s own site notes its lubricants are safe with latex condoms. The 500 ml is the largest Pjur Aqua we stock.
  • Eros Aqua Sensations 100 ml, 250 ml and 1000 ml. Colourless, odourless, non-sticky, latex-compatible; the one formula we stock in all three sizes from 100 ml up to the litre.
  • Aqua Quality Water-Based Lubricant 1000 ml. The plain litre bottle: transparent, odourless, latex- and toy-compatible, with a pump-style bottle that stores on a shelf.

Thick water-based (anal, larger toys, torsos)

  • Cobeco Anal Lube 100 ml and Cobeco Anal Lube 500 ml. A water-based formula with a notably thick, cushioning texture; latex-compatible; the 500 ml is the larger bottle in our range. Thick water-based is also the right choice for TPE torsos and sleeves, which take a lot of lubricant per session.

Short ingredient lists and plant-based

  • Pjur Med Natural 100 ml. The catalogue prints the whole list: water, glycerin, xanthan gum, benzyl alcohol, sodium benzoate, potassium sorbate, citric acid. Useful if you like to know exactly what is in the bottle.
  • Eros Bio Vegan 100 ml. Vegan Society certified, water-soluble, colourless and odourless.

Formulated for toys

Silicone-based lubricants

Silicone lubricant does not absorb or evaporate, so a small amount lasts a long time and it holds up in water. It is latex-condom compatible. The one hard rule: keep it away from silicone toys. Pjur’s and Eros’s own product text says the same.

  • Pjur Original 30 ml and Pjur Original 1000 ml. The reference silicone lubricant. The 30 ml is the right way to find out whether you like silicone at all; the litre is the bottle to buy once you do, because silicone is used in such small amounts that a litre lasts a very long time.
  • Pjur Basic Silicone 100 ml. The entry-level silicone from the same maker; the product text states it is not recommended for silicone toys.
  • Eros Silk 100 ml and Eros Silk 250 ml. A dense silicone formula in a dosing bottle; again, not for silicone toys.

Hybrid lubricants

A hybrid blends a water base with a share of silicone. You get more longevity than water alone and easier clean-up than pure silicone. Because there is silicone in it, treat hybrids as “check first” with silicone toys: use on a spot at the base and look for any change in surface texture, or just reach for water-based.

100 ml or 1000 ml: when the big bottle makes sense

  • You have not tried the formula yet: 100 ml (or 30 ml for silicone). The returns window covers unopened products only, so an unloved litre bottle is yours to keep.
  • You already use a formula weekly: 500 ml or 1000 ml. Per 100 ml the litre is almost always the cheapest way to buy the same product; do the division on the product pages.
  • You use a torso, sleeve or large toy: these take far more lubricant per session than skin-on-skin. A thick water-based litre (Cobeco Anal Lube 1000 ml) or a plain litre (Aqua Quality, Eros Aqua Sensations) pays off quickly.
  • You want silicone: even the 100 ml lasts months because you use so little; the 1000 ml Pjur Original is for people who have settled on it for good.
  • Storage: litre bottles need a shelf and a cool, dark cupboard. Decant into a 100 ml bottle for the bedside and refill.
  • Travel: 100 ml is the cabin-baggage limit for liquids in most countries; the litre stays at home.

How to choose: a 60-second checklist

1. What are your toys made of? Silicone or TPE: water-based. Glass, metal or hard plastic: anything. 2. Condoms? Water-based and silicone are latex-compatible; with hybrids, read the label (our two picks state it). 3. How long do you need it to last? Short sessions: water. Long sessions or water play: silicone (no silicone toys) or a hybrid. 4. Thin or cushioning? Thin: Pjur Aqua, Eros Aqua Sensations. Cushioning: Cobeco Anal Lube, Stimul8 S8. 5. New to it? 100 ml. Settled on it? 500 ml or 1000 ml. 6. Prefer a short ingredient list? Pjur Med Natural prints seven ingredients; Eros Bio Vegan is certified vegan.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use silicone lubricant with a silicone dildo or vibrator?

No. Silicone lubricant can degrade a silicone toy’s surface. Use water-based. This applies to the Silexd, Adrien Lastic, Fun Factory, Lelo, Satisfyer and Womanizer products we sell.

Is water-based lubricant safe with condoms?

Yes. Water-based and silicone-based lubricants are compatible with latex condoms. Oil-based products are not.

What about TPE torsos and masturbation sleeves?

Water-based only. Thick formulas such as Cobeco Anal Lube work well because the material is absorbent and sessions use more lubricant.

Does a litre bottle go off?

Check the period-after-opening symbol on the label (the small open-jar icon with a number of months). Keep it closed, cool and out of sunlight, and decant into a smaller bottle for daily use so the big one stays clean.

Why do some water-based lubricants feel sticky?

Usually because they have started to dry. A few drops of water, or a dab of saliva, revives most water-based formulas; silicone and hybrids do not do this.

Which lubricant works with everything?

A plain water-based formula such as Pjur Aqua or Eros Aqua Sensations. It is the one bottle that is safe with every toy and condom in our shop.

Can I return a lubricant?

Within 14 days of delivery if it is unopened and sealed. Opened products cannot be returned for hygiene reasons.
